Observations with Virality Index

Update #2 of the sorts...

Posted 2 years ago by Tom Maiaroto.

I've made substantial progress with ViralityIndex.com and I'm continuing to learn a lot. The observations are great and already have taught me more about social media and sharing behavior than I thought for. I expected some geeky numbers sure, but I'm walking away with a lot more. In the future, I hope to bring in some bits from Social Harvest as well. Though again, my current focus is in proving these value and finding correlations between the virality score and ad revenue, traffic, etc. Without having access to a lot of that sensitive... Can a Dead Link Still be Viral?

Messages echoing down the halls of the internet...

Posted 2 years ago by Tom Maiaroto.

I came across an interesting thing today in my research. Well, I've seen it twice now. Most of my samples are YouTube videos, and there's been two that I've seen been removed. Well, actually three. Videos get removed frequently from YouTube - especially popular ones. I imagine this is simply because they stand out and get more attention. Why? Many reasons, nudity or other terms breaking content, copyright infringement, etc. There was a Star Trek: The Next Generation gag reel video that was removed fairly soon after it became popular.... Many Views Doesn't Mean Viral

Be careful with that view metric...

Posted 2 years ago by Tom Maiaroto.

One thing that I learned early on in my research (years ago now, I don't mean my recent research) and really my education with how the internet works is that "views" are a pretty weak metric. Be it a web page or an ad or a viral video. There's really more to look at. Yet, views still lure us into this false sense of security. It took a while, but now many people have a better handle on the pageviews metric compared to unique visitors. When it comes to web page traffic, people are now a little more realistic and they don't use the pageviews... Read More

Virality Research Update #1

I think I'm on to something here

Posted 2 years ago by Tom Maiaroto.

I think I'm going to start writing about my research a bit and my findings on somewhat a regular basis. Social Harvest: Virality Index is up and live and going pretty well, please check it out. I've made significant progress on it, though I'm still tweaking things so things to change a little bit. It's going to be a tweaking process for a long time to come in order to get things just right. What's the expression? Google wasn't built in a day? Oh, right, Rome. It is my belief and hypothesis that if a "score" for each URL out there shared... Read More

Virality

Research Into New Metrics

Posted 2 years ago by Tom Maiaroto.

I've been doing a lot of research lately. Good research. I still have a lot of pieces to put together, models to smooth out, and more...But, things are going well. Well enough that I figured I'd leave people with a sneak peak. What exactly is it? It's a measure for how viral something is. That's, surprisingly, something that's a bit of a mystery still. If you ask people what makes something viral (or search engine it) you'll come up with a lot of varying opinions. The truth is, most of what you will read is incorrect. Number of views does...
