Where the Viral Things Are

Virality Score's Powerful Data API

Posted 1 year ago by Tom Maiaroto.

Virality Score has a lot of data to say the least. Gathering data from various sources, watching the top news outlet RSS feeds for emerging news, and listening in on social media...The database speaks volumes about what is going on in the world. It also happens to be quite intelligent given all of the semantic data. In the process is an evolving data API that lets us make extremely powerful observations about content on the internet. For example; as news becomes viral, let's say you wanted to know what source was responsible for creating... Read More

The Most Viral Companies

How would you go about figuring this out?

Posted 1 year ago by Tom Maiaroto.

Virality Score gathers a lot of semantic data (and I'm always working on gathering more). It all sits in MongoDB and so that's where the magic happens with its aggregation features. Today I challenged myself. I wanted to know what the most viral companies were. In other words, what companies are trending because web content which mentions those companies is being shared with great frequency. What I ended up with was quite interesting and essentially looks like this: What this shows is The Weather Channel, The Washington Post,... Read More

Virality Score Update #4

Virality Index is now Virality Score

Posted 1 year ago by Tom Maiaroto.

So it's been a real long while since I wrote a status update for my startup/side project/proof of concept/awesome new internet metric/research/passion whatever I call it. I call it Virality Score. I changed the name because it made more sense...The Virality "Score" is what your'e getting from the tool (it is the metric), using the Virality "Index" to do so. However, the major development was in the data being gathered. I could now, for example, tell you what the most viral color being shared across the web is. Nope, I haven't found a... Read More

My First Skill Share Class

Posted 1 year ago by Tom Maiaroto.

So I put a class together and put it up on Skill Share. Overall, it was a fun experience. The site is clean and the form to build your class is also very clean and guided. The only trouble I really had was with uploading videos. About half the time they didn't end up encoding and attaching to the class. Eventually I got everything up though. I used Koding to demonstrate some things while I recorded the lessons which made for an excellent teaching tool. Being able to record my screen and simply switch between two tabs in my web browser... Koding Review

Taking the New Kodingen for a Test Drive

Posted 1 year ago by Tom Maiaroto.

So Kodingen has been hard at work rebranding and rebuilding its online IDE. They are now just "Koding" and their new service offering is still in beta...But it's pretty awesome. There are a few online IDEs that I love, but I don't feel like they can replace my local development environment. Well, the new Koding may be a contender with its new version! All of the same old features that they had with its IDE and virtual machines that handle PHP, Perl, Python, and Ruby are here. Just redesigned a bit...And there's a terminal. How does it...
